When I first embarked on my journey as a lawyer, I never imagined that I would eventually find a complementary career in the tech industry. The law has been and remains my passion, but like many professionals, I began to sense the growing influence of technology on every aspect of life and business. That realization sparked a journey that has reshaped my career and opened doors to a whole new world of possibilities.

I’m excited to share my journey into the tech industry and how it beautifully complements my profession as a lawyer. My story is one of curiosity, bold decisions, and the incredible power of lifelong learning.

The Turning Point: Embracing Tech

As a lawyer, I’ve witnessed firsthand how technology is transforming the legal profession. From artificial intelligence tools that analyze contracts to online platforms that simplify client interactions, the intersection of law and tech is undeniable. I realized that if I wanted to remain ahead of the curve and create more value for my clients, I needed to understand this new landscape—not just as a user but as a creator. For example, in January 2025 the Lagos State Judiciary went fully digital with E-Affidavits and E-Filings.

The fully remote nature and flexibility of tech roles were also incredibly attractive to me. Imagine having the freedom to work from anywhere while building solutions that solve real-world problems. This potential for a location-independent career resonated deeply, aligning with my long-held desire for a more flexible work-life balance.

Taking the Leap: A Master’s Program & A 6-Month Remote Internship

To bridge the gap between interest and expertise, I decided to enroll and completed a Master’s program in Digital Marketing and Business at Max Business School & a 6-month remote internship program at Digital Vineyard that provided hands-on experience in providing digital solutions. It was a bold move—juggling my legal practice with learning a completely new skill set was no small feat. But I knew it was the right decision.

Through the 6 -month program, I gained practical knowledge and skill in web development, problem-solving, and digital transformation strategies and many more. I learned not just the technical skills but also how to think like a tech consultant, identifying problems and crafting solutions that drive impact. Additionally, I acquired a new Google Ads Display Certification Badge by completing the Google certification, meaning that Google has certified me as an expert in helping companies grow their businesses online.

The Synergy of Law and Tech

While tech has given me a new perspective and skill set, I’m still fully practicing law. The beauty of this dual career is how they complement each other. My legal background helps me approach tech solutions with a unique analytical mindset, ensuring they’re not just innovative but also compliant and practical. Similarly, my tech knowledge allows me to advise clients on issues like data privacy, cybersecurity, and technology contracts with a deeper understanding.

This synergy is a reminder that embracing new skills doesn’t mean leaving behind what you already know and love. Instead, it’s about expanding your horizons and creating a richer, more fulfilling career.

Here are a few ways in which law and tech complement each other:

  1. Analytical Skills: Both fields require the ability to analyze complex information and identify key issues. Lawyers are trained to dissect legal documents and construct compelling arguments. In tech, I apply these skills to problem-solving and system analysis.
  2. Attention to Detail: Precision is crucial in both law and technology. Whether drafting a contract or developing a software solution, attention to detail ensures accuracy and reliability.
  3. Strategic Thinking: Lawyers often strategize on behalf of their clients, anticipating potential challenges and devising solutions. This strategic mindset is equally valuable in tech, where planning and foresight are essential for successful project execution.
  4. Ethical Considerations: Both professions demand a strong ethical compass. Understanding the legal and ethical implications of technology is vital in ensuring responsible and fair use of digital solutions.

Lessons Learnt

Here’s the big thing I learnt: you don’t have to choose between law and tech. You can combine them! And this isn’t just for law. Anyone, in any career, can add tech to what they do. Whether you’re a teacher, a doctor, or an artist, tech can make your work better.

If you’re curious about tech, like I was, you should try a 6-month remote internship. It’s a great way to learn new skills and see how tech works in the real world.
